November 17 Candles burn in Croatia tonight in the memories of Vukovar. This day is a day of remembrance of the things that took place in Vukovar, that will always be marked in history for centuries and generation to come together. To share a prayer to remember the victims of 1990s homeland war in the eastern town of Vukovar.
Every city has a street named Vukovar and each town has its own story to share. Osijek has its stories some that will be remembered. The location for many tonight will stop for a moment to remember and set rest on the very street Vukovar to lay memories of the event with a candle on Vukovar Street
Bikers will ride through the various cities with a stop in Osijek at the monument with the Red car that took on the Tank. The journey has been long for many Bikers as they approach the city of Vukovar sometime this evening. With them, the thoughts and memories will be shared amongst their comrades.
The young generation that was born less than 10 years ago may not completely understand everything that happened during the dark days of history. It is up to the older generation to fill in those gaps and shine the light. To help those understand the difficulties endured so that it will never repeat itself again. The pages are written in the books and with each passing year a reflection of how important life really is.
Catching the 12 Anniversary of Noc Muzeja in Osijek was a great time for many museum enthusiast. Arriving early was a great idea to avoid the crowds that would later arrive in the evening. Crowds had gathered outside in the cold to enjoy this free event Night of Museums. The event was from 18:00 to 01:00 just after midnight, with many other parts of Croatia taken part of this spectacular event. With many programs that were interactive for children and young adults making it the perfect family night. For the older audience there was plenty of Multimedia and live performance made it a unique experience while having fun. The music of the time is ever present with the live performance as it echoes through the museum gallery corridors amplifying the history of Croatia vast history.
The first visit was to Museum of Fine Arts greeted visitors to a unique idea a make a wish tree with black ribbons. They were encouraged if they liked to take part using a white fabric paint marker to write their wish. The building outside did a great piece of art work using candles to make the logo used for Noc Muzeja. Every room had its own identity of art in its own genre of style. It was interesting to watch how audience observed abstract art work. Transpiring curiosity for patrons to ask what it meant to them and to reflect ideas. Looking at photos and digital images immerses the audience to place that they have not visited back in time and contemplating the thoughts of being in that situation. Children were given an opportunity to be creative of manually making prints on the printing press. There were many programs through-out the evening after the children’s hours that ran earlier in the evening. There was even a gold gilded open frame encouraging visitors to take a selfie to celebrate the evening.
On hand was open exhibit of digital media that is new to Osijek, this is can be seen at their website here if you missed seeing the show. This is something that is metamorphic as it evolves with many artist taken part of the Pivilion.(The website is called pavilion.net )
The Museum of Slavonije was the next stop with two parts that were accessible to the public. Live music performance from young and old students did a great job. Many visitors stopped to enjoy the harmony and tranquility of the music. The violinist playing classical music really added nostalgia and atmosphere to the event of Noc Muzeja. Walking through the museum at night had its own experience that is a rarity for many people. The lighting and the shadows created by the night gave sculptures a different appearance.
The importance of a museum in a digital age
The luxury of being surrounded by the wonders of antiquity makes one realize the wealth of history and preservation that is required for generations to come. Looking at photos of the past and seeing the exact same piece of furniture in the museum has an effect of seeing the richness of an era that has long gone. To have children see how type writers and printing presses existed before the digital age is hard for some to understand. However for young audience to see it in real time let them see that days before the digital age of copy and paste was more manual and labour intensive . The museum does not have the instant gratification swiping to see what is next. The audience must visual understand the object and the clues provided to understand and retain the information.
Looking forward to next years Night of Museum in 2018 as this year was a success with many visitors and tourists having a night out to enjoy this event. With many thanks to all the volunteers and people who took donated their time to make a success.

While the snow has kept many of Osijek Citizens warm Inside-Osijek was able to capture these great works of art from the low lying clouds early this morning. Taken along the bike bath between Osijek and Visnjevac was a fable like forest that looks very unrealistic? Should you happen to wake-up early this is a rarity and soon disappears as the sun lifts up shining through the mist.
With cold weather being unpredictable it’s a great time to enjoy skiing and sledding. Have fun and keep warm. January is almost over and spring should be soon on its way.
Osijek Pedestrian Zone in the downtown square of Ante Starcevic
There is much noise about the downtown Osijek with the looming project of turning the pedestrian area into a road way. The area of concern involves a large amount of pedestrian traffic and has been automobile free for a few decades. The city has proposed change in Urban Development Plan raising concern of the pedestrian zone. One of the best known land mark pedestrian area around the area of Ante Starcevic Square, with the street of Kapucinska and Šamačka under investigation by the committee.
Other cities in the world would dream of having an open car free zone area. The area generates revenue from tourist that are in escape mode getting away from the daily commute of being stuck in traffic. History of Architecture. The area is known for its love of architecture and cultural preservation. If you look back at some of the old photos you can see that the downtown core has not changed much in the past century. Just recently in the past decade the underground mall was created as well as revitalization of the square. The city carefully harmonized modern architecture for access to the underground concourse mall. Above ground is an incredible water fountain that has become the post card of Osijek.
The other concern is that this is major transfer hub between the two tram lines. During peak times of the day students race across the square to get to the other tram just before it pulls out. It is also import to consider the aging population of citizens this has become a place of familiarity to meet up with old friends and visit old places they have grown used to. The chances of getting hit by a vehicle would significantly increase as they have become used to it being a pedestrian zone. The world is changing as society has become Eco-friendly with the growing need of open space free of pollution. This would be a set backwards and saying it’s better to drive and waste valuable resources
This would be a set backwards and saying it’s better to drive and waste valuable resources for Osijek. To bring up to date, so far it looks like citizens of Osijek have demonstrated reason for the project not to go forward. Thus the pedestrian zone remains for the downtown core of Osijek. The last thing one needs is a vehicle forgetting that the road is closed causing harm to pedestrians because the driver forgot what times vehicle were allowed..
PUBLIC HEARING until TO 23 JANUARY
Plan available on the website of the City of Osijek www.osijek.hr
The Antique Market is once again happening this weekend Saturday January 7th in the old city of Tvrđa in Osijek. It takes place on the first Saturday of every month. This is the place to be as it will brings some great finds for collectors or those who just want to be part of finding a piece of Osijek’s rich culture. Here you will find everything from books to some really unusual stuff that is hard to find. It all depends on the things you are looking for. The collection is always changing as the vendors bring a lot of pieces to choose from. There is much to see from Antique porcelain, furniture, clocks, wooden toys, and other items that you may never have seen before. This history of Tvrđa is a story in itself bringing the feeling of the old world making it the perfect place to stroll through the antique market.
Classical or even Contemporay Art
Local artist have put together some great pieces of art painting from the surrounding areas of familiar landscapes and subject matter nearby. There are also a good collection of Art buyers that have brought a broad mixture of Antique prints and paintings. The pictures tell a story of events that of religion, sports, politics, architecture, adventure and of course a time of chivalry. Chivalry was a time of romance in the medieval days. In modern day times it would be called the science of love. The painting techniques and the materials used make this market a great place to find something that fits everyone desire to have a piece of living history.
There are many great Antique finds here at the market that are intriguing to look at. The amount of unique items make a great conversation piece.
The antiques are arrangement of different era’s that have long been forgotten by the millennial generation. For instance there is the classic Gramophone which is hand cranked moving the record around the table. Producing amazing sound that the needle picks up off the record and is amplified through the gramophones trumpet shape. There was no electrical wiring in those earlier days. It is even possible to find the old cast iron used by simply placing the Iron on a hot plate to transfer heat. The devise was quiet heavy and used to Iron clothing. This may just be the place to find some of the piece you may have been searching for in your European collection.
Collectables and books
There are many people on search for old buttons or old coins of the past. The vendors have great knowledge of the items and can easily explain the history of the significance to the time period. In recent years people have started to look back on many things that have slowly faded away. The one thing I did not know was that Croatia has a vast amount of comic books from the period of when Western movies were popular and there was a fascination with cowboy comic books. The amount of different subject matter is great and it’s always interesting to find an old cook book or lifestyle magazine.
The irresistible taste of Osijek and Baranja
The food and wine selection is amazing as it has everything from this area of Slovanja and Baranja County to taste. With many local wines on the scene that will please every connoisseur. Slovanja is known for having some great spices such as paprika. There are many traditional dishes such as Punjena Paprika Goulash , Čobanac Stew, and Fish paprikash. In this region Osijek serves up the dish that many people have heard about. They come here just to get a taste of “ fiš paprika ” ( Fish stew or Fish Paprikash) which is known for its sharp distinct smells and flavour of local fish from the river Drava and the spices of Paprika being cooked in a large black kettle over an open fire. There is a saying “that fish need to drink as well” meaning to add a bottle of wine to the mixture while cooking. You will often here a Croatian say this “’ Riba mora imati dobru piće’’.Slovanja and Baranja also have some great cheese and salami. There is much here to fill everyone’s hearts of fancy.
After spending a day browsing the many vendors there is the café bars to sit and relax. It is always great to watch the crowds pass by. The Antique Market happens on the first Saturday of every month. Each time there is something new and old to see and with a bit of history to catch up on with friends, family and people visiting.
