Osijek Pedestrian Zone in the downtown square of Ante Starcevic
There is much noise about the downtown Osijek with the looming project of turning the pedestrian area into a road way. The area of concern involves a large amount of pedestrian traffic and has been automobile free for a few decades. The city has proposed change in Urban Development Plan raising concern of the pedestrian zone. One of the best known land mark pedestrian area around the area of Ante Starcevic Square, with the street of Kapucinska and Šamačka under investigation by the committee.
Other cities in the world would dream of having an open car free zone area. The area generates revenue from tourist that are in escape mode getting away from the daily commute of being stuck in traffic. History of Architecture. The area is known for its love of architecture and cultural preservation. If you look back at some of the old photos you can see that the downtown core has not changed much in the past century. Just recently in the past decade the underground mall was created as well as revitalization of the square. The city carefully harmonized modern architecture for access to the underground concourse mall. Above ground is an incredible water fountain that has become the post card of Osijek.
The other concern is that this is major transfer hub between the two tram lines. During peak times of the day students race across the square to get to the other tram just before it pulls out. It is also import to consider the aging population of citizens this has become a place of familiarity to meet up with old friends and visit old places they have grown used to. The chances of getting hit by a vehicle would significantly increase as they have become used to it being a pedestrian zone. The world is changing as society has become Eco-friendly with the growing need of open space free of pollution. This would be a set backwards and saying it’s better to drive and waste valuable resources
This would be a set backwards and saying it’s better to drive and waste valuable resources for Osijek. To bring up to date, so far it looks like citizens of Osijek have demonstrated reason for the project not to go forward. Thus the pedestrian zone remains for the downtown core of Osijek. The last thing one needs is a vehicle forgetting that the road is closed causing harm to pedestrians because the driver forgot what times vehicle were allowed..
