It finally feels a bit more like Christmas On December 14 as Osijek finally gets some snow. The Advent in Osijek finally got the one thing that was really missing Snow.(Saying good-bye to Scrooge and the Grinch that has been holding back the Christmas spirit in Osijek.) The city became an instant Christmas wonderland as the fresh snow falling sparkled around the city. With Osijek having more Christmas lights hanging in the centre. Every lamp post and tree in the city centre had lights this year’s festivities it was probably best. Driving in the weather was a completely different story as many felt the slippery slushy road conditions. It did not take long for a few fender benders to happen.
Many visitors were a bit surprised as were the citizens of Osijek not having Advent in the city centre or not as a big event as the year before being in Tvrđa. Instead, it was located in the park in-between the two locations. The only thing remaining in the centre was the starting point for the Christmas tram. The Christmas Grinch seemed to leave for a while this year finally with snow arriving in Osijek.
Osijek Advent event in 2018 is once again free to everyone to enjoy. There was no admission to get into the park or additional fees to pay for concert shows and performances at the main stage. The best way to get to the Advent is by Tram as parking spots soon disappear.
This Christmas market in Osijek has many traditional Christmas favorites available to try and taste. Local wineries had some kuhano vino (cooked wine) and also to be found was local gastronomy giving a little feeling of warmth for many visitors as snow fell. The Christmas lighting hung from tree to tree helped illuminate the park in bright Christmas colours. The placement of huts in the park took some navigation to get around as they branched out in narrow corridors. Plus to get to the Christmas tram you had to walk to the centre to get tickets for the event and starting point.
This year many will notice this year is that Ice Rink is back in the place that has been home for many years. The rink has better lighting and equipped with a sound system that will be great to bring in the New Years. One of the other things that got highlight was the new athletic facility open in the building that has been restored to its glory in Architecture with additional modern features in the back of the building.
One may be wonder where the rides were? To find them was tucked in the corner of the park behind the end row of huts. The vintage rides have become a tradition for Osijek Advent consisting of a small Ferris wheel, Marry-go-round, and swings. There was little distraction for parents as it was in a small area and children could walk from ride to ride.
The concert stage was perhaps better placed this year as it would not interfere with the church mass being held in Osijek Cathedral. The huts were lined along the side of the stage for refreshments and hot served food. The best is one less worry of having to cross the tram tracks or having to wonder when the next tram would pass through. In which the tram street noise would not interfere with the music. The venue and lineup change constantly and best just to be adventurous as you may find a band or musician you might not have heard of before.
Some people noticed that the Advent itself in Osijek felt a bit smaller as the huts where scattered.( One part in the park and the other in Trvda) However, to look on the brighter side of things Osijek still was able to have advent. Plus the Grinch nor Ebenezer Scrooge did not steal Christmas from Osijek.
Last weekend Osijek held its annual event as spring weather finally arrived called “Šarena jaja bojama grada” i “Cvjetni Korzo” (Translation “"Colorful Eggs in the Colors of the City" and "Flowers Promenade”) With over 50 vendors showing off some of the most colourful decorated eggs in the square. This showcases surrounding areas of Slavonia and Baranja customs and traditional carving of eggs. The amount of detail and the time taking to carve an egg and get them prepared can take two to three days depending on the details as one lady said. There was plenty of Folk music and Dancing as local schools participated in the annual event. With the sound of traditional playing of Accordion music filling Ante Starčević square with plenty of great fun.

Caught up with Nikola Faller at Tvrđa this weekend. The sculptures were still standing even after last night’s rain that slowly turned into Ice rain.
What was the length of time that it took to build a sculpture?
The snow sculptures this weekend took on average about 4-5 hours with the constant change in weather. There is also the prep-time in packing the snow which is needed before it is even ready to start designing. Once packed with blocks of snow is settled than the work starts.
Unfortunately, he said that one of the bigger Sculptures did not make it overnight. It is the weight of the snow as it gets to heavy and starts to bend.
Below is a close up of sculpture one can see the cross hatching technique using various tools to add depth. The amount of detail is amazing to see up close, and with the colder weather helping. Over the past few days other sculptures were built inf front of Tvrđa. His passion for detail and building can been seen through his work. Nikola has had great conditions for building in Osijek and with the snow and ice rain.
This weekend brought out crowds of people living in Osijek and visitors to Osijek had a great time enjoying these sculptures after a large accumulation of snow. With a chance for them to have the opportunity to stand beside the massive sculptures and enjoy them before the weather starts to get warmer.
To see more photos of the Sculptures and to learn more visit the Face book page
Nikola Faller is the organizer of the Slama Land Art association has been known for his many Sculpture that is built out of Straw during the Summer month but to see something like this made out of snow is rare as winters appear to be warmer.
The last day of February is something that a lot of people in Osijek have been waiting for. The main reason could be that this month alone we have seen more snow than all of Winter. Even with the Buse festival and other events was not enough to scare away winter this year for the most part.
To find out more about the Buse there is a good article more about it from last year. The buse of Osijek & Baranja. There are so many ways that this month has its good parts to it as well with valentines day for many to get out and have some fun. With yesterday being a day if your lucky would have been a good day to stay home. For others it was an adventure just to get to the store. Still the easiest way to get through town was the public Transit.
This weekend was Bušari of Đakovo a 30 minute drive from Osijek. It is the biggest carnival event in the eastern part of Croatia.
In the streets of downtown Đakovo will be celebrating its 24th year with crowds gathering from all over Croatia and other countries to take part of this huge event. There is much to see with some of the biggest Buša you can imagine full of fun and comedy. With lots to see with carnival customs, song, dance and entertainment through the streets of the city.
The sights and sounds were incredible as this is one event that should be added to everyone’s wish list. It started at 3pm today in the center of Đakovo with a great turnout with perfect weather.
Here is a photo gallery of the famous event.

This month in Osijek has started off with a good start with positive things happening. In Osijek University this past week was held a lecture on campus for the students launching a brand new field of study. The lecture was presented by colleagues from Rimac Automili, Matija Gacin and Rajkumar Rajappan, and it was conceived as a confirmation of successful continuation of cooperation between Rimac Autombil and FERIT-a (i). The new course will be a first in Automotive Course with various aspects of the program. This will be of much interest to the University and will be of great interest to many students that are attending the University.
Osijek Future in Technology
With this happening and many positive changes will bring more development in the IT fields and technology companies. Osijek has the appearance of both modern world in IT and it historic base of rich cultural heritage. Attracting many people visiting Osijek and finding new entrepreneurs that are shifting Osijek to the forefront.
Dean of FERIT
Dean of FERIT, prof. Drago Žagar, said: "I am very pleased to have developed this project of cooperation with Rimac Automobiles successfully for a year or two. I'm glad we continue to develop cooperation with companies and what new companies are coming to Osijek and what new opportunities for our students are opening up. With Rimac Automobiles together we have developed a new study program - automotive computing and communications - these are the future engineers who will find the job at Rimac Automobiles. We are also cooperating with several other companies with whom we have developed a study program. This program I believe that we open space for our students to be easier to enter the labor market. On the other side, through such co-operation projects these companies come to Osijek, open offices, allowing students to stay here to live and work here. We also have a RT-RK company that which is co-owned by the faculty where 80 of our students are currently working. On the other side, through these projects of cooperation these companies come to Osijek, open offices, and give students the opportunity to stay here live and work. I can announce the arrival of another big company in Osijek. We are creating the conditions to prevent the outflow of highly educated people who are the drivers of the future development of this area.” (Translation from Osijek.031)
Students that are thinking about the idea?
Its great news that so many have said that it presents a greater influence for Osijek University as it being first launch with one of Croatia’s leading industries. One also must wonder also from a student’s point of view in Academic studies. The course itself is something to think about as the new technology is evolving quicker than the text books can be written. The other side of things is creating new opportunities for students with the ever changing IT world.
Mate Rimac on his facebook page “RIMAC Cars and FERIT (Osijek) have launched the first automotive course in Electrical Engineering / Computing (Automotive Computing and Communications)” There has been spread of this news through many portals and on-line news sites here are just a few links to see what is being said about the launch of this new venture:
Fiš paprika competition 2018 for the worst Fish soup.
The annual event Gezina Fišijada held in in tvrđa on January 14th was the place to be for Inside-Osijek. Taken place in front of the restaurant Slavonska kuća (Slavonian house) on Firingerovoj Street. The most ironic part that makes the event interesting is it's not for the best, instead, it is a competition for the worst ever fiš paprika (Fish soup paprika). There seemed to be a lot more competitors this year than any other year. With over 100 cooking areas assigned to the competitors that stretched along the full length of the street and passing around the corner of the famous Osijek Restaurant. The smell of fish soup being cooked over an open Fire was priceless. To really experience the cooking of fiš paprikaš and the amazing atmosphere you had to be there.
What to bring this Year:
With crowds of people arriving earlier it was a great chance to see how things were set-up for Gezina Fišijada. The contestants brought to tvrđa their own fish pre-cut carried in baskets and bags. With help of friends and family carrying the rest of the gear and a large caldron to cook in. The fire wood was cut up and placed in large piles for the competitors to carry to their assigned spot. Everything was well-organized by the planners as each spot had the teams name and number hung on the tri-pods.
There were a total of 100 or more registered teams at this year’s memorial of FIŠIJADA. The numbers were higher as the event has grown in popularity.. It started all in the early morning on Sunday, as there was lots of cheer and good humor of joking around. The event attracted many people from different walks of life from soccer stars, athletes, musicians and politicians. With the classical sound of tambourines bands to entertain the competitors and the citizens of Osijek. Many patrons of the event had a chance to get a free taste of fiš paprika. The weather really helped this year being warmer and and clear skies
History of the event:
It has been a long tradition in the city of Osijek with a past that should never be forgotten. Gezina Fišijada has been taking place every year in front of a restaurant called Slavonska kuća (Slavonian house) on Firingerovoj Street. There is a lot of history about the restaurant Slavonian house as it was founded in 1994 by the late Geza Gudlin. The tradition continued by Tomislav Baric who helped organize the event as a memorial of the well-known man Geza Gudlin. Hence the naming event after him calling it “Gezina Fišijada ’’. What was different was there was a catch or twist as one well knows. This may come as a surprise for most Croatians as to win first place one would have to make the worst ever fiš paprika.
The organizer Tomislav Barić and owner of Slavonska kuća (Slavonian house) explained the reason for holding the now popular event. This event was to honour a man best known as Geza Gudlina who was a legend to the city of Osijek. To remember a man in good spirits who made his mark on the River Drava. He was best known for his recipes and the way he prepared them. Such was his infamous fiš paprika. However Geza had tragically passed away 13 years ago.
There are three categories in trophies to be awarded to after the finally judging:
Loš Fiš (meaning: bad or Lousy Fish soup)
Najgori Fiš (meaning: The worst Fish Soup)
Malo Manje Fiš (meaning: A little bit bad Fish Soup)
A little bit lost in translation
Good luck to all the people taken part in todays event and have lots of fun with friends and relatives.
Darda this past weekend held in the courtyard of Esterhazy castle was the full of cheer and Great Spirit. They festival helped celebrate the 2nd weekend in Osijek Baranja County. Turning back time to a down-to-earth festivities for the whole community and visitors to enjoy. There was plenty of things to do and see at the castle. There was a wide range of music from live bands, folk music, local music groups, and the DJ adding the upbeat tempo. If you came hungry there was plenty of great food to enjoy from the local area. With just a few weeks to Christmas was the perfect opportunity to join in the craft workshops to make something to cherish as memories of the advent. Even with a bit of chill from being in the open area but that did not stop the local people and guest visiting the castle for Advent over the 3 day weekend.
Meeting the Director Bogdanka Cudic Vilic
Director Bogdanka is an incredible person to talk to as she spent time bringing the event together. Her colleague Dragana Lisjak was also responsible in the amazing event. Everything came together with the great team environment. This was the third year hosting the event and every year they try to do a bit more. The incredible part was how the event worked in the Esterhazy Castle. The castle structure is in need of repairs and to be able to use it in the cold weather for activities was tricky. To have heat in the rooms required heaters and lighting as night falls quicker in the winter. Her team pulled it off and did the wiring necessary for safety. In the temporary café bar they wanted to have a wooden fire place, however the chimney was deteriorating. To get around it and make it functional they built a working chimney that would not deter or change the castles structure or appearance. She was very enthusiastic about the arts and crafts, getting people to take part of the activities. The one place she said was very trendy was the café bar and a must see. The whole area of Osijek-Baranja County is gaining international attention through having more events like this.
Arts and Crafts workshop.
It was a bit chilly in the room but that did not matter with the fun of making something. The room was kept warm with a heater to help out with many visitors doing crafts. The picture below gives an idea of some of the crafts that were made over the weekend
The volunteers really made it happen with great ideas for everyone to take part in, from drawing, painting and building things with very little material. The Volunteer instructor’s patience were extraordinary as she helped out the children with sowing and assembling the Christmas decorations. The two circles made of felt cloth were cut carefully and stitched together with thread. The children then stuffed the circular pocket with cotton to make it a Christmas ball. The young ones loved the idea of making something themselves. The parents helped sow with a needle and thread bringing the Christmas ornaments together. It was a hand on experience to make something that was not store bought. A rare moment for most kids to do something made from cloth, string and some bells.
Vilenjačkom caffe baru
The next room of castle courtyard from the arts and crafts workshop was called "vilenjačkom caffe baru” (translation Elves Café Bar). To describe the feeling of being in the room was old and yet very cool with an unconventional Artistic style. The Elves café bar was the ideal place to get out of the cold for some warmth. They transformed the space embraced the room into carefree space that was relaxing and unusual place that you could socialize and hang-out with friends. During the weekend live bands performed inside with the crowd singing along to some classic songs
The café bar hosted an exhibition called “Darda kroz vrijeme’’(Darda through time) with reproduction photos of the Esterhazy history. The director pointed out that some of the photos date back to the earliest parts of the 19th century. Her favourite picture of Estherhazy castle was a photograph of two ladies standing in front of the castle dressed in the fashion of the era. One could see how the castle looked back in the early 19th century before it fell into ruins. (With a lot of work the castle could be turned back into its former glory.)
Food and Drinks
The food was from Osijek-Barnja area with local gastronomy of Kulen and other favourites. There was something for everyone to enjoy. The one drink that everyone talks about during the time of Advent that would make you feel warm is Kuhano Vino. (It is known also as Mulled Wine or boiled wine) This has been part of European tradition in Croatia and neighbouring countries. There are many different recipes that some would swear it’s been in their family for generation. But this is a whole other story.
Tradition classic lifestyle.
The one thing that stands out for Advent in Darda was is its connection with the classical tradition of rural life co-existing in a modern contemporary society. The rural event remained untouched and nothing was painted or glamorized as there was no need for fancy lights or huge plastic candy canes. The castle is really the focal point creating a nostalgic setting full of decadence, wonder and charm. Everything was kept realistic and simple in a non-commercialized environment. They did something which was incredible to witness merging its cultural rich history and making it accessible for everyone to enjoy. There was nothing materialistic to fill the need to consume things but rather bringing the community and visitors to be part of the festivities.
“Advent na Dvoru Esterhazy’’ was put together for the third year, with the Association for Rural Tourism of Đola Organization. In cooperation with the Municipality of Darda and the Baranja Tourism.

The first day of Advent came to Osijek on Friday 1st with many people coming to take part. After three years absents in Downtown Osijek the event came back. For some, they thought that Advent would lose its nostalgia and antiquity due to it not being at Tvrđa this year.
This will be the first year in history that Osijek has a real ice skating rink in Ante Starčević square. Located around the fountain the city had been working very hard to make it a reality for Osijek. City worker did it in stages of first creating a temporary base that would make it a level surface adding a mixture of sand. The next step was adding the plastic tubing for the system to keep the ice frozen as temperatures hovered above 0 Celsius. With Friday being the opening day the ice rink was set to go accompanied by Ice rental hut on the side.
The city of Osijek brought in Christmas trees to the urban environment to bring a little Christmas charm. However Osijek did a unique theme once again with Coca-Cola bottles stacked in cone shape giving it the appearance of 4ft Christmas tree. As night fell the decorative ornaments were lite up given it ambiance and nostalgia of Christmas past.
The kick off for advent would not be the same without a well-known band called “Big Banda Požega.” They played a bit of everything from Christmas classics to Croatian songs with the backdrop of Osijek Gothic Cathedral. The talented group of musicians and singing artist pleased last night’s crowds singing in Croatian and English.
The food on the main strip could be smelled miles away with some of the well-known favourites of the region to name every vendor on site would take another article to write about. There was something for everyone in the many different styles of food.
With so much food to choose from as advent was in full swing, it does get some visitors thirsty. There was plenty of good spirits in the air with an assortment of wine to choose from at the Essker Shopping Center of Osijek. WineOS festival was a two-day event (Dec 1st, Dec 2nd) bringing in a good number of leading wine producers from all over Osijek and neighbouring countries came to Osijek. They had their best wine and leading experts to showcase pairing with amazing gastronomy. It was a chance to explore Croatia wines and learn about the many different styles and experience of tasting.
There was something for the little kids as the city brought in an old-fashioned carousel, swing ride, and a mini Ferris wheel. The glimmering of lights from the rides was incredible to see even for adults, it brought out the fun for everyone. The Christmas tram made its stop right beside Osijek’s oldest tram on display. The tram is almost a permeant fixture advent in Osijek.
It all finishes up the on New Year’s Eve with a big bash and concert ringing in the New Year beside Osijek’s Gothic Cathedral. The many sights, sounds, and great food brings out the best in the spirit of Christmas. Osijek’s Advent is the ideal place to spend time amongst family and friends enjoying the fun.
