What is Liberty Festival in Osijek ?
This will be the first Liberty Festival in Osijek happening this weekend (August 25, 2017) with many different themes happening. The festival will include discussions, education, Cyclist race around Osijek, music and dancing. Sound like a typical festival at first but this one has some great things to it to set it aside from other events. With so many things happening in one place it is worth looking into. The festival kicks off in Osijek at the catacombs on the left bank of the river Drava. Liberty Festival is one festival that looks at things as they are and the ability to turn it into a positive.
Damir Katusic who is the main event Organizer has been talking about this event for months and bringing some great ideas to the table to think about. He has been looking at positive ways to bring businesses and people to Osijek. There is this certain unique entrepreneur spirit in him that continues into some of the themes of Liberty festival. Leading up to the various panels of open minded discussions. Exploring global ideas about new technology and how it will affect everyday living. A broad base of panels of thought provoking ideas has been put into the discussion and education programs.
Lectures and panel discussion will take place at Barutani on Friday and Saturday between 14 and 20 pm. A lot of good topics and guests have been announced. Among other things, it will be about self-sustainable communities, Tesla Innovation Center, Croatian Ethical Bank, Go Green Marketplaces, Traditional Food, Tourism, Bitcoin and Blockchain Technology
Liberty Festival organizers have included their own unique race for cyclist.
These events are beginning to bring the need in the education, entertainment and sports segment to a greater extent, and awaken, instigated and strengthened more people. We sincerely believe that such events are very important and necessary to bring new tourists and visitors, and to brand our region as an excellent tourist and cycling destination, and this kind of sport is essential for the revitalization of cycling sports in Croatia, "explains Damir Katušić, the main organizer of the event

This weekend was the 2nd annual Tarda Festival held just 5-minute drive outside of Osijek. In a town called Darda was the place to be at the Esterhazy castle. It was full of excitement bringing together rich cultural history from the past history of life for the three days. Reconnecting history through cultural activities, fine clothing of the era, food, and music and dancing. The theme draws upon the early 16th century and at the dawn of the 18th century. With special concert performance from the hit group Frajle.
In the Evening around 6 pm
Upon arrival, it felt like a royal welcome with the Esterhazy Castle in Darda being decorated in festival fashion. At the gate of the castle around 6 pm visitors were greeted with a royal welcome with a young drummer rallying the crowds’ attention. With the audience attention, the comedic performance began with a man dressed in green clothes dated to the period carrying a Turkish Nargila. To add contrast to this character was the arrival of the tall royally dressed Sulejaman. The crowd was then invited to a royal tour of the grounds with each vendor asked a series of questions. It was an incredibly well performed with a jab of slap stick comedy.
Imagine how life was as the sunset.
The atmosphere brought the charm of the community together as Lanterns gleamed with the sun setting. The children played without cell phones, instead were found laughing and racing around the bails of straw and hanging white linen sheets with plenty of fun. In the distance, guest were treated to an old fashioned buggy ride around the grounds. For many Adults, it was a time to socialize and catch up with friends and neighbours under the lanterns. The left side Esterhazy Castle windows it was fun to watch the Konobars (waiters and waitresses) racing for customers drinks. The food in the night air brought together the festival feeling as people waited for the Frajle concert to start.
Catching up with one of the Organizers
In a rare moment at the Tarda festival, I was introduced to the one of the many who help put together and organize the event. I spoke to Organizers Bogdanka from Lag- Baranja with special thanks to Damir Katusic for the introduction. She was able to take some time for a one on one conversation and much was discussed as this was the second year for this event. The event has taken months of preparation and planning that has not been an easy task. She said that it would be great if it caught on in media attracting a bigger crowd an audience for next time. The event encircles two story lines and two different time periods which was quite the challenge. There was a lot of effort put into the re-creating garments that resemble what they would have worn in that era. The highlights of the event is the gala performance in the square and the cultural dancing. The organizers turned things around to be interactive engaging the audience into the story. Bringing much deserved attention from the media as this was done in a fun creative way.
The Challenge of bringing two themes at the same time.
The challenge was to make it interesting and not just a lecture on history. Taking the famous story about the rule of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire- The Sulejaman Magnificent (Sulejmana Veličanstvenog). The other story was the history of Esterhazy family with the relationship to the surrounding land of Osijek and Baranja with Esterhazy Castle in Darda. This weekend was not filled with a classroom history lesson of lectures and slideshows.
Cultural and Tourism agencies help play an importance of the event is not only to bring history to life but also the wonderful scenery and beauty of Baranja. Organized by the Association of Rural Tourism in Đola and the joint organization of the Darda Municipality, Turkey's Development Agency TIKA, Turkish Cultural Center Yunus Emre, and TZ Baranja
The most important part is that there are more plans for future Tarda festival with some exciting stuff happing. (Who knows there maybe even be a fall autumn theme or possible Advent theme here in Esterhazy Castle?)
The month of August maybe the busiest months of festivals and cultural events before the school season starts up again. Osijek and Baranja surrounding area has been host to more festivals, cultural events and sports activities this year. The Municipalities and Tourism board has seen a positive which has been incredible. It can be noticed with growing number of Tourists arriving in by buses these past summer months. This month NK Osijek will be facing some more historic moment in its soccer club history.

Osječke ljetne noći (Osijek Summer Nights)
August ends with a band with the last instalment of Summer Nights happening on the last Friday of the month. Mark the date August 25, 2017, on the calendar with “Osijek Summer Nights” (“Osječke ljetne noći”) as it is a date to remember. There is many different events to choose from starting in the evening and running till Mid-night. The music ranges from Jazz, pop, rock, classical and folk. One just has to mention “Osječke ljetne noći” (Osijek Summer Nights) with its huge success this summer in the number of people taken part in downtown Osijek. This might be the biggest “Summer Nights Festival” in Osijek.
With the temperature getting hotter this week in Osijek, this has many people thinking how hot it will get. If you just got back from the coast or just visiting your probably thinking where to chill and keep cool. Ice cream will be the favorite for the kids while you are touring the city or doing some shopping. This week maybe the week to skip on the marathon run.
The one thing to do is avoid too much exercise such as running or long bike rides. Drinking plenty of water to keep hydrated during the heat wave will help. Don’t forget to wear Sun screen and a hat for protection as it’s easy to forget how quickly one can get burned. It’s always best to keep cool in the shade to minimalize UV rays and the summer heat.
If you can’t make it to the swimming pool. A small inflatable pool for under 100 Kuna’s will do the trick especially if you are not a fan of crowds. It’s always a good idea to supervise young children because a lot can happen in a few seconds. The other cool game is tossing an ice cold water balloon around for fun. The old school as some may remember is getting sprayed by the garden watering hose. For those that find it still too hot, the patios will be packed as people will be seeking the cool breeze from the river Drava.
“Copacabana’’ or “Kopika’’ beside the river Drava is one of the coolest places to be in Osijek. Get there early before noon as the water is cool and plenty of parking. High noon the place is full and even gets more packed as people leave earlier from work on hot days like this. All four pools will be open this week due to the heat wave. With two water slides that stand two stories high and have been refurbished this year. With plenty of shade with trees and shelters to enjoy the sounds of summer.
Osijek and the surrounding areas have some great outdoor pools to keep cool. There are also some small pools as well. Here are some of the top of the list for pools to visit and have fun. It won’t be long until we say summer went by so quickly with school a month away.
Knezevi Vinograd Bazeni
Just outside keeping the drive to a minimal as the no one wants to drive far from the city center. They have an Olympic pool of 25 X 50 M, and a small children’s pool 8 X8m which is perfect for the day in the summer’s heat.

It was the day everyone had tickets felt proud of the city of Osijek and the home team NK Osijek. This will be a historical moment for NK Osijek history books. People lined up the past few days as there were only 15,000 tickets available for this game. This past they had already sold 10,000 tickets with people lined up patiently waiting. This will be the qualifying game against PSV in the qualifying round of the European League.
“The last two days have been crazy as people got hold of Osijek Soccer tickets for the big game on August 3rd as they go against the Netherlands.’’
It was the talk of the city and even at the best place to cool down “Copacabana’’ or as some call it “Kopika’’ beside the river Drava it was impossible to escape the excitement of tomorrow’s big game. Everyone was wishing to get tickets had to listen to the radio for a chance to win as the game was sold out for the day. There will be people waiting to see if there is a small amount of tickets still available on August 3 game day.
Last night in the evening the fans of the soccer club got together and cruised down the streets of Osijek with a police escort. With flags waving and the honking of horns brought the city to life as people raced out to see the parade of cars and fans cheer on NK Osijek.
The video says it all with so many people taken to the streets of Osijek to cheer on the home team.
With the game happening tomorrow the temperature will definitely turn up the heat as tomorrow will feel like 40 degrees Celsius and clear skies for the evening. With many fans showing up to the game the best way will be to take the tram. If you do drive to game its best to show up early as parking will be hard to come by. Make sure for tomorrow to where some blue and white clothing to show support for Osijek Football club.
