Something positive is happening in Osijek-Baranja that will hopefully inspire others to be entrepreneurs. This young team has set a goal to stay and live in Osijek by creating their own business. They have recently ventured into the craft beer market but they have gone one step further than the rest. The newest brewery you may not even know about its existence yet is LuPaHor Brewery. With its tagline “Customize your beer.” They have combined technology with something that is century years old of brewing.
The question remains how to stand out above the crowd?
With the beer market being labelled as one of the most exciting industries to get into these days. Everyone is trying to get a piece of the craft beer markets. Whether you’re in Croatia or the other side of the globe it has witnessed a great revival with many festival events leading the way. However, it takes a lot of thought and effort into creating something that set the bar above the rest. The one line that really sets them apart is “Now imagine that you could order craft beer according to your taste and wishes, creating your own” This has been a dream and imagination for many with much enthusiasms as they can now have the option. The team LuPaHor has hit the dream and inspiration of making something that fits your taste for beer.
Osijek recently has become the most innovative and sparking fresh ideas in the past few years. With many young people deciding “let’s do something we like and enjoy and stay instead of leaving for other countries.” It’s great that there is this U-turn movement in Osijek which is catching on, despite the other topics that the media likes to play on. They have just launched their Indiegogo campaign it can be seen here. LuPaHor Brewery is really has done something that no other Craft Beer Company in Croatia or Europe has done.
“Lu Pa Hor Brewery - Customize your beer! Croatia”
The video is produced well without any gimmicks or special effects which is rare in the marketplace of Craft Beer. Martina and Jasmin in the video have done a great job of highlighting how the company works. (Missing Goran in Video) The video shows how the individuals can make the beer to their taste using the App.
They have tackled the one question that everyone loves to ask “How did you start the business?” With a bit of fun they solved this mystery so we won’t tell you as you should really check the video.
I had the chance to interview Jasmin Pavlović with just a few questions about the start-up of entering into the Craft Beer Market.
Yes many questions the biggest is the brewing. How will you be able to control the aroma and flavour for each customer?
“Regarding the aroma and flavors, we plan to have different levels of aroma, bitterness etc. that you can choose as a customer, thus creating your own customized beer. In this way, you can customize your beer and simplify the brewing process.”
Would you just have maybe 4 types of beer or different flavours to start?
“We currently plan to put three products on the market, two being IPA's and third Blond Ale”
Is craft beer startup looking at the wide market or the niche market?
“To answer your last question, our initial market would be targeted towards local pubs that are adopting the craft beer culture. Afterwards, our plan is to expand nation-wide and ultimately to EU market, but that is a long way.”
In the near future would the brewery be in Osijek, or somewhere on the other side of the river Drava?
“We are exploring the possible locations for our brewery in Osijek, but other side of Drava River (Baranja) is also a possibility. In general, we are oriented on Slavonia and Baranja country for the location of our brewery.”
I noticed you choose the bottle over cans? Why this direction? As I see in North America cans have higher sales than bottles.
“In Croatia the beer culture is more associated with bottles than cans, the main reason being the price difference. In retail beers in cans are more expensive than beer in bottles.
In last few years some shopping markets like LIDL have started to import very cheap beer in cans, even cheaper than our domestic beer, so it is possible that this trend of cans vs bottles changes in the near future.”
How many are on your team for the startup?
“There are three of us in our team: Martina Lucic (food technology), Jasmin Pavlovic (marketing and economics) and Goran Horvat (engineering)”
What are the plans?
“We plan to go step by step....this is the only way to succeed (my opinion)...Of course, we will be open to all quality co-operation... We will need every help, but we will know exactly when the campaign ends. We love beer so we hope our campaign will be successful... me and my team have good ideas but money is always a problem, especially in Croatia. Also, with our endeavour we have tried to encourage young people to stay here in our Croatia and make a life here, rather than leaving our country in search of a better life abroad.”

Just outside Osijek this past Saturday was a medieval fair camped at the Historical Fortress Kolođvar. This was the fourth consecutive year of “Return of knights to Fortress Kolođvar” (Povratak vitezova na utvrdu Kolođvar) bringing out Knights, Archers, Maidens and the Princess. The event started at 16:00 and carried on throughout the night with medieval entertainers. With the participation of Knights in the program from various parts of Croatia and Hungary. It was a fun-filled night with plenty of food, with “Grah” (meat and bean soup) being the main dish. The event brought out the best in the surrounding communities as it was well organized and full of life
Throughout the evening there was always a live performance with School of Swords and Archery to start the action learning about the features and how things were made. With the guidance of the masters demonstrating the drills that used to be performed. With the chance to wield a sword and feel its true weight and strength is impossible to resist both young and old. The Sound of swords clanging with a solid blow to the armor made the audience cheer as the Knights battled around the fortress. What was even more incredible was the Knights took time to explain the tactics of how to wield the sword properly and maintain balance and control.
With only a small break in between the action, the next event was up watching the Knight’s battle. The audience got just a rare glimpse into the past, witnessing the difficult task of suiting up the knights for battle. The weight alone of the armor itself required the assistance of their steward to help with the proper fitting of the helmet. Even as the sun was setting the heat of the day caused the knights to feel the physical task of swinging the heavy blade in combat. Watching them battle in training practice without full force reminded the audience of how difficult it was to move around in amour.
The children played an import role as night set. They had a great opportunity by chance to participate with the knights in a comedy-drama/battle. The head night had a lot of fun with this as he brought humour and fun to the children putting them to the task. With the children racing down the hill to fortress battleground to get swords and shields had the chance of being part of the show. Imagine 30 or more children of all ages swinging a sword and the chance to chase down the villain. In the video, they actually took part in playing the role of a heroic knight.
There was more to the Return of knights to the Fortress Kolođvar then just battles. There was the art of Archery, where guests had the chance to learn how to be an Archer. With the guidance and patience of a professional Archer walking them through careful instructions on how to draw the arrow aiming at the target circle. There were lots to see for young and old had a chance to look at the armor up close with the opportunity to wear some of the pieces. The Knights helped out with the difficult task as weight alone of the chest plate was too heavy for some of the younger children. The amazing thing for many was they could actually ask questions about things being able to see up close and not just from a textbook. With the theme of Knights, people were able to buy some great wooden swords and shields on location made from people living in the area.
Most of the fortified tower still stands in ruins with time passing by it was not until the late 20th century that was gained as valuable culture landmark. The first thing noticeable is that was some indication that there used to be a raising and lowering of a drawbridge as there is a bit of a landing entering into the tower. It would of be of great help if it was carefully reconstructed because one must first walk down a deep sloping ditch and then back up through a staircase. Only a few arches were reconstructed with the bricks decaying and mortar crumbling. There are some of the floors plans still visible through the overgrowth of vegetation. The rooms were mostly small in size and being inside the circular tower give way to the irregular room construction. With the historical facts of big hanging frames about the tower, it provided many bits and piece of historical facts and legends of Kolođvar. It is interesting to note that the tower survived many battles that it has seen from its first with the Turks dating back to November 25, 1573. It has since that date seen many battles to follow and the most threatening was urban expansion. A reference as to how modern living used the bricks causing the structure more damage.
Notes “The people from surrounding settlements broke the walls and carried the bricks to homes.1967. The Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments from Osijek begins protective works. Until 1970 g the vegetation and the collapsed material were removed, and the overturned arches were restored” Reference translation from (http://www.tzosijek.hr/povratak-vitezova-na-utvrdu-korodvar-425)
The importance of having Return of knights to Fortress Kolođvar
The history of the many different parts of Croatia has become a real archaeological significance of tracing the cultural heritage in recent years. Osijek and surrounding areas have recently achieved in finding new historical evidence of past civilizations dating back to the Roman Empire, coming to surface in the area of Osijek and surrounding communities in recent years.
Without the historical medieval events, the tower would not have continued to gain recognition and inspire more people to visit and learn about these historical landmarks. Inspiring schools to have field trips or University archaeology excursions in the further examining the nature of the structure connecting to the past. The Kolođvar tower exemplifies the medieval architecture
How to get to Kolođvar
The location is just 15 minutes outside Osijek with the medieval fortress standing in ruins. To get there you need to head to Čepin and drive along the street Osijeka Ul and make a turn to street Krbavsaka that will take you to Ivanovac. It is important to note if you reach the small town of Ivanovac you missed it by one minute. The road is more or less a gravel path with some large rocks surrounded by fields. The thing to watch out for is the small sign written “Utvrdu Kolođvar”
Supporting notes Kolođvar was built on a hill in the swamp where a prehistoric settlement existed, and thereafter a Roman military camp. It was sometime later with history first written about the land being given from the Kolođvar family in 1290 that the tower was built. FASHIONABLE FOOD ON MY WAY
Mc Donald’s faced the fate of being demolition today with no notice or anyone from Osijek really knowing about its fate. With a full crew of construction workers and heavy machinery on site to do a complete teardown. With Mc Donald’s location on the corner of Drinska Ul and Ul Kneza Trpimira it was one of the places to be in Osijek for something that was Iconic of North American fast food chain. The main question could be: is it history or just the fast pace world of North America creeping up with the changing times.
There was no notice on the door a week ago with the Mc Donald’s serving their Mc Donald’s happy Meals and Big Mac’s to the customers. It came to a shock today as many people pulled up to witness the destruction as it was a site to be seen. y came to say good bye to the many fond memories of having their first date or catching up with friends after the Osijek football game.
The location of Mc Donald’s in Osijek at of Ul Kneza Trpimira and Drinska Ul was probably the first restaurant to have a drive-thru window in Osijek. Having a drive thru was something counter culture as most people preferred to sit and eat food to socialize. In North America, the culture was referred to as Dash board eating as they raced to work driving and eating at the same time. The location is sure to see a new Mc Donald’s before the end of 2017, as the property and location is too valuable of land with being close to the many sports facilities and highway.
Then and Now
The building of Mc Donald’s in Osijek resembled the Iconic American style from the 90’s era and early 2000’s with the colours of pop-culture fast food. The style and colour were bright white and red walls with the light fixtures of modern culture. The round circular and square marble tables were the styles of the last decade. The chairs in cold grey steel dominated the fast food industry for interior design.
With the Mc café that swept through in early 2010, it was to appeal to the coffee culture of just every other fast food café. With the dark grain wood on the walls and the dark sleek floor that was hip in most upscale café shops that served Expensive Latte drinks. The one thing with the change was it lost the appeal to young families as it looked very dark and did not look like the traditional Mc Donald that everyone grew up with. The question remains will the new style appeal to the people living in Osijek as this design is now eight years old.
