The coldest day in Osijek feeling like Minus 21 Celsius. Weather warning in Croatia was from Red to Orange.
The first week of the New Year in Osijek and has been the coldest so far. Other parts of Croatia had faced even colder weather then normal. Living in Osijek we are used to mild winters and days of sunlight. This is weather more like a typical day in Northern Canada as we bundle up to face the extreme cold. Just don’t ask a senior how they fell about the weather unless you offer them a warm coffee. Tonight a weather warning is in effect, make sure to call on friends and family to see if everything is all right.
The amount of pure sunlight today was defiantly a plus at making it not feel so cold. Today if your used to the coldness of feeling like minus 20 something, is the perfect day to enjoy the outdoors whether it be Ice Skating or a hiking. Riding a bicycle would prove to be too cold and really tricky especially with the amount of ice on the paths. The outside was not the place to be for some animals, with cats and dogs chosen to stay warm inside. Getting around the roads were clear, however the side roads were a bit icy as the temperature had falling a lot. The Tram and bus service was the best way to get around and was fully operational.
The Antique market was still happened this past Saturday in Tvrđa, as many braved the cold. It would have been great if they still had the wood stove furnaces fired up. The best seller one can guess would be the warm winter jackets and hats. There was a small selection of Antiques vendors as the coldness would make the metal and wood very brittle. It’s always great to get out and visit as you never know what treasure one may find. For me was the great surprise of bumping into friends here.
Ice had started to form on the river Drava for the first time in a long while. You could hear small ice plates smash up against the shore line in Tvrđa. Being beside the river with the dampness made the chill even feel colder. With the banks of the river being Icy it’s a good idea to keep small children and pets as the risk of fallen in would be serious.
Taking pictures was this weekend was a great opportunity because the sky was crystal blue with little atmospheric dust interrupting the clarity. The colours really pop out when taking a picture. A simple rule that is often easy to forget: 1) when taking a picture always make sure the sun is behind the camera or you will have everything appear dark and shadows. The only issue is with the camera battery malfunctions and shuts down due to the coldness. Just one of the many challenges in frigid temperatures
On the other side of the globe this weather would feel like a typical winter day in North America. This is normal for Canada this time of year. The further one travels north the colder the temperature with more snow. Many people braved the weather to get out and enjoy the crisp air. Creating the perfect outdoor conditions for Ice Fishing, Hockey, Snowboarding and Skiing. When it comes to days like this often older cars will not start it’s because the coldness has frozen the cars battery. In some parts of Canada many Canadians face ahead of them countless days of shoveling the snow morning and night.
So keep warm this weekend and bundle up staying close to the fire place. If going outside today make sure to dress in layers. Often on days like this the famous last words of parents “Wear your hat and gloves it is cold out there.” Next week by Thursday hopefully the weather will finally start to get warm. . It’s great that Osijek does not get any major snow storms.
